Adam: (to Mr. Pickles) You have mustard in your cufflinks?
Derby: They're condiment cufflinks. Do you not watch TV at like 3 in the morning?
Derby to Adam[src]

"Mr. Inventor" is the fourth episode in Season 1 of Mr. Young.

Synopsis

Adam becomes jealous when Derby accidentally invents a miracle hair growth formula. When someone wants to market his formula, Derby has to recreate it but cannot remember what the formula was. Meanwhile, Ivy needs to pass her CPR course. By the end of the episode, Ivy still did not pass, although she had saved Preston Pickles.

Overview

Adam shows the class how to make plain ice cream, using cream, sugar, and a bag of ice salt. Derby, disappointed over the flavor, goes to Adam's desk and starts mixing several items into the ice cream, making a greenish liquid that he puts his hand on, realizing his hand grew hair, and realizing he has created a hair growth formula.

Meanwhile, Echo finds out Ivy has signed up for a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) class, erroneously thinking it stood for cute personal relationships and making out with a dummy for 10 minutes. The class's teacher, Principal Tater, shows up, and insists she should stay because it was the other elective available (besides Mock United Nations) for her.

Adam protests Derby's use of the hair growth formula, but Derby, now with a beard and chest hair, continues and walks through a corridor of interested students willing to buy the product, including an interested Tater. Tater, after buying the product and developing long blonde hair, returns to the CPR classroom and explains the process to the students. Echo succeeds, while Ivy removes the dummy's head while checking for obstructions.

Back in the class, Adam talks to class about the rutabaga, when Derby arrives to the class (with a fu manchu beard) just when the bell rings, saying he had lunch in a secret teacher's cafeteria that Adam had no access too. By then, a man shows up, introducing himself as Preston Pickles and also his products, promising to make Derby rich (which causes him to imagine asking for extra cheese in a pizza), but Adam insisted his formula should've been tested, although Derby assumed he was just jealous.

In the school yard, Mr. Pickles introduces the new name of Derby's product, "Hair Today", and Tater shows up, asking for more of the product because it only lasted a couple of days. Derby said he can't give out any, but Mr. Pickles decides to make Tater their "hair model" for an infomercial the next day. However, when asked about the formula, Derby fumbled, not recalling what he used to make it.

Back in the CPR classroom, Echo continues to surprise Tater by doing a CPR on two dummies at once and even getting one of the dummies to do CPR on the other dummy. Ivy, however, only does a makeover to one of the dummies, mocking Tater for not showing up with his blonde hair. Meanwhile, in Adam's classroom, Derby shows up and tries to whip up another batch of his formula, ignoring Adam, who expected him to apologize, and tries to prove a point by showing his rutabaga studies instead. He makes a new batch, but instead of growing hair, his hand starts repeatedly hitting him and he eventually falls into the floor.

In the CPR classroom again, Tater praises everyone for passing the class - except Ivy, who saved no dummy until then. Echo and Tater try to convince her, although she only begins to be convinced when Echo tells her that the dummy she'll save could open the world's biggest mall. Unfortunately, this leads to her destroying the dummy, and also the other dummies in the classroom. Meanwhile, back in Adam's classroom, after 33 tries, including one that made ice cream, Derby manages to create a batch of Hair Today. The infomercial starts in the school yard, with Mr. Pickles advertising the product, which leads to Adam doubting it. The two choose Tater from the audience (intentionally), and Derby successfully applies hair to Tater's head. Unfortunately, the formula applied doesn't stop growing, making Tater unable to see him.

Tater, during this process, accidentally throws some of the formula in a nearby table at Adam and Echo, who also grow hair and are unable to see anything. This causes Mr. Pickles to call off the contract with Derby and, surprised by the reactions, has a stroke and falls down the floor. Echo and Tater try to help, but do CPR on unrelated items; it is Ivy who saves the day by successfully saving his life. Tater says, however, she didn't pass his class because it only counted on the dummies.

Back in Adam's classroom, Derby finds Adam messing with food (and using a hairnet). He apologizes for not listening to him, and Adam tells him that one of the ingredients he used in the formula was chlorophyll; the sun triggered photosynthesis on it, and it caused the hair to grow exponentially, realizing the product would only work on people who'd never see the sun. Adam, realizing he had made ice cream earlier, gives him an A+ on his assignment, and decide to taste Derby's ice cream together; surprisingly, they end up tasting Derby's formula instead.

Memorable quotes

Ivy: Hey, Turkmenistan! You may lead the world in iodine reserves, but the nightlife in Ashkebab leaves much to be desired. Seriously, try to get a bowl of plov after 11.

Tater: Derby! I heard about your little science experiment... (whispers) I love you.

Derby: Now there's a new genius in town. A rich genius. Extra cheese-rich.

Tater: Is that what you want, money? Cause I got money. I got a lot of it, mind you, cause I'm a high school principal who can't stay away from the ponies. And it costs three dollars to ride them at the petting zoo. Toasty's my favorite.

Adam: I'm not gonna be your butler!
Derby: Well, you don't have the legs to be my maid.

Trivia

  • Even though Ivy preformed CPR on Preston Pickles, she did not pass because Mr. Tater said it only works on the dummy.
  • Innuendo: Derby tells to Adam that he proved the hair mixture in "other places".
  • Derby's wildest dreams are ordering lots and lots of pizza, as revealed in this episode.
  • Slab is absent for the first time in this episode.
  • This was the first, and only episode to have an audience reaction sound other than laughter, with the crowd exclaiming in disgust as Preston Pickles drinks his own sweat.
  • This is the first episode to have a character other than Adam as the main character.
  • In the original airings of this episode, when Derby's hand attacks him, he says "Hey! That's Inappropriate!". But in some later airings of this episode, he says "Hey! No hair pulling!".
  • Preston Pickles makes his debut in this episode.
  • This is the only fourth episode of a season to not feature Rachel, as well as being the only one to not feature her debut in the season.
  • This is the first episode to indicate a near-death experience, as Preston had a heart attack and would have died if Ivy hadn't saved him.
  • The events of this episode led to the events of Mr. Pickles.

Running Gags

  • People proving the hair mixture.
  • Ivy attempting to save a dummy ends with the dummy being ripped.
  • Preston showcasing various products to Derby.

Errors

  • Principal Tater is a principal, not a teacher, so he shouldn't be able to attend the CPR class.

Allusions

  • Pac-Man (1980s)- When Ivy decapitates a dummy, the sound of Pac-Man when he dies is heard.
  • Apocalypse Now - Principal Tater uses the final lines from the movie. "The horror, the horror."
