Derby: Now could you put it in terms I can understand?
Adam: Volcano go boom, smoke make us tell truth.
Adam and Derby[src]

Mr. Honest is the seventh episode in Season 1 of Mr. Young.

Synopsis[]

A botched volcano experiment in Adam's lab creates a gas that makes everyone tell the truth. When Mr. Tater finds out, he places Adam, Echo, Derby, Slab, and Ivy under quarantine. Derby makes Slab cry and then tries to apologize, but he keeps saying the wrong things. Adam tries to prevent any form of communication between him and Echo because he's afraid that if he talks to her, he will tell her how he feels about her. Ivy tries to get out of the school to get to the mall, but Dang keeps stopping her.

Overview[]

In the Science Lab, Adam shows a class a model volcano, a classic science experiment. As he asks the class the ingredients for the volcano, he adds sulfur (for the smell), tomato sauce (to simulate molten lava), vinegar, and baking soda to the volcano, but nothing happens; Adam explains this is a realistic volcano, meaning it could explode at any moment. At the end of the class, Echo asks for help with her homework assignment, while Derby secretly adds more vinegar and baking soda, alongside Adam's lavender body wash and zit cream. The two notice the smoke coming out of their volcano, and Echo tries to put it out with water, but Adam tells her it was actually vinegar. The volcano soon explodes, causing the classroom to engulf in a cloud of smoke.

As the smoke dissipates, Derby begins saying nonsensical things about opening a window. At that point, Adam receives a call from Tater, wondering what happened after hearing a loud boom from the room. Derby and Echo ask him to lie; Adam, however, says exactly what happened earlier, to Tater's shock. He passes his phone over to Derby, who proceeds to say the exact same thing. Adam soon discovers the tomato sauce he grabbed from the cafeteria expired in almost 30 years earlier, in 1982, and the expired tomatoes released nitrogen that, combined with the other elements in the lava, created sodium thiopental, aka truth gas, making all of them tell the truth. He explains this, in simple terms, to both Derby and Tater.

Soon after, Tater quarantines the entire classroom, showing up in a hazmat suit, clarifying the entire place was under lockdown until the effects of the gas had passed. This does not prevent Ivy from entering, saying their mother had asked her to drive him home, but Tater, after seeing she was also affected by the gas, refuses to let her leave. He says the five of them would have to say in the classroom; at this point, the others realize Slab was still there, sleeping. After a while, Adam and Echo clean up Adam's desk, at which point Adam, still under the effects of the truth gas, says he can't sleep a wink without Mr. Cuddlesworth, his blue blanket, as his closet supposedly has monsters, to Echo's shock. Meanwhile, after being shown Derby's prank kit (he says he has one because he likes pranking), Ivy decides to leave the classroom, but is stopped in the corridor by Dang, who says it was a place where he could wear hats in peace without fearing of leaf monkeys.

Back in the classroom, Adam tells Derby that he's scared of talking to Echo and telling her about his feelings for her, which he describes as an "unhealthy and somewhat creepy" obsession, while Derby says he should just not talk to her. Meanwhile, Derby explains his prank: he will make Slab think he has slept for a hundred years, putting out signs like "no jetpacks allowed" in the classroom and also giving him a fake beard. Later, Adam uses one of the classroom's chemicals to numb his tongue, and Echo soon discovers this by playing a game of Charades, but when she asks him to explain why, he runs away in order to not reveal his true feelings, eventually falling into the floor and getting a nosebleed.

Ivy is later taken back to the classroom by Tater, where she praises the white stripes on his hazmat suit. As he leaves the classroom, Slab is awoken by the door shutting, and as he sees how old he is, Derby laughs, and under the effects of the truth gas, admits he pranked him. Slab, also under the effects of the gas, says he was fooled, to which Derby calls him big and dumb, causing Slab's feelings to be hurt. He also explains that he uses his stature and strength as a defense mechanism to mask his pain, due to his difficulty to fit in, insisting he's not a cruel person, and begins to cry. Back to Ivy, she tries to leave the classroom once again after Derby tries to flirt with her. She opens the window curtains, only to find Dang here. She opens another curtain to find him, and soon carries a cart full of plants somewhere, while Derby pulls down the curtains while using one of Dang's hats. Adam soon shows up, with cotton in his red nose, and in another game of Charades, Derby easily guesses what Adam was saying, that Adam numbed his own tongue so Echo wouldn't understand him, and later walks away.

In the school corridor, Ivy, disguised as a plant, tries to leave. She's soon spotted by Dang, who sees a chum plant and recalls not seeing one since leaving Vietnam. While shaking the tree's roots, several of Ivy's belongings fall, and while fetching for chum, he accidentally grabs Ivy's nose, thinking she ate the plant's fruits. In the classroom, Adam uses a device to control his arm during future Charades; when Echo shows up, he's unable to control his arms, and Echo thinks a leaf monkey stole his fancy hat. She uses Morse code instead to communicate to him, an ability she learned as a badge scout. When Adam explains he used electrodes in his arm, he puts a hand on top of his head and falls down to the floor. Meanwhile, Derby tries to comfort Slab, but the truth gas makes it worse as he says he did mean it and Slab had no other good qualities.

Tater soon brings Ivy to the classroom again, saying he was enjoying his chum chum smoothie when Dang showed up complaining about leaf monkeys, and says there would be serious consequences if she was spotted in the hallway. She soon realizes she could go through the school's vent system, and prepares to get in. Meanwhile, in his desk, Adam mixes a portion of mold, pollen, dust and cat hair, items he was allergic too, and soon his eyes are shut due to the allergic effects. Derby, while grabbing a chair, meets Slab again and tells him that he indeed had a heart, and Slab hugs him. Echo praises him, but he soon admits that he was lying, realizing the effects of the gas had gone away. To prove it, he asks her if she finds him attractive; she says yes, to which she says she was cured. The gang later calls Tater, who's skeptical at first. Echo praises him as a beloved principal, which he says could've very well been the truth, but when Derby does it, he decides to let everyone out. He soon sees a dizzy Adam, explaining he did all of that so he could avoid talking to Echo, upsetting her, and Tater says the quarantine will hold until Adam's symptoms passed.

At this point, he asks where is Ivy, as debris (and Ivy herself) all from the ceiling, causing his suit to be ripped. He tries to leave to fetch his sewing kit, but discovers Dang locked the door, calling him a bald demon.

Memorable quotes[]

Adam: Can anyone name the two ingredients commonly used to simulate the explosive force of an eruption?
Derby: A can of chili and irritable bowl syndrome.
Echo: Vinegar and baking soda.
Adam: Very good, Echo!
Echo: Well, that's what's on your desk, it was either that or lavender body wash and zit cream.
Adam: What? Ha... the drugstore must've handed me the wrong bag... I ordered, uh, shaving cream and chest air conditioner.

Adam: When tomatoes go bad, they release nitrogen. That combined with the other elements in the lava must've created C11H17N2NAO2S!
Echo: Could you put it in terms I can understand?

Dang: Dang is everywhere and nowhere... but mostly (teleports to behind Ivy) everywhere.

Derby: I'm gonna make Slab think he's been asleep for a hundred years... and is awakened in a bleak dystopian future. (he puts a sign saying "Cafeteria Special: Macaroni and Beef Pill, Six Hundred Galactic Dollars"
Derby: Check out the cafeteria special.
Adam: 600 for macaroni and beef?
Derby: I told you it was bleak.

Ivy: Too bad we're on the second floor, or I'd go out the window.
Derby: You could make a rope out of your clothes.
Ivy: (dismissive) How about I make a rope out of your clothes?
Derby: You want to start upstairs or downstairs?

Trivia[]

  • Adam accidentally tasering himself was reused in Some Assembly Required, another one of Dan Signer's shows.
  • Leaf Monkeys and Fancy Hats are first revealed in this episode.
  • Echo doesn't seem to respect Tater as much in this episode, as revealed at the end.
  • When Adam falls into the floor while Echo tries to guess what he was saying in a game of Charades, she sees the pool of blood caused by Adam's nosebleed (not shown on-screen) and cites the movie The Hunt for Red October.

Allusions[]

  • Futurama - Derby's prank involving Slab waking up in the future is based on the tagline in the series.
  • Back to the Future - Tater's hazmat suit resembles the hazmat suit worn by Marty McFly in the movie, with the only difference being the stripes.

Errors[]

  • Adam said the chemicals reacted with nitrogen to create the gas, but then it should have reacted with the large amount of nitrogen in the air.
  • When the volcano first erupts, Derby's arms were seen close to his chest. But in the next scene, they were at the sides of his body. He wouldn't be able to move his hands away in time.
