— I know! What does he have that I don't have... other than chiseled features, abs of steel, and the ability to make toast in his pants?
Derby to Adam[src]

"Mr. Roboto" is the second episode in Season 1 of Mr. Young.

Synopsis[]

Adam creates a robot student to help control the class. However, the robot malfunctions and tries to terminate Principal Tater.

Overview[]

Adam starts teaching his aerodynamics using a toy plane, when Derby comes in late bringing a box of donuts, which attracts the attention of Slab. While searching for his favorite donut flavor (banana cream), he throws the donut in the direction of Derby, the other students, and especially Adam; by the time Slab finds the banana-flavored donut, he realizes he already had breakfast that day, throws the donut at Adam, and the bell rings, ending class. The jelly-covered Adam accidentally calls Dang, who helps him clean up the mess.

At the Young house, Rachel's on the phone, agreeing to deliver for the city's seniors, when Ivy shows up and tells her mom that she's decided to wear yellow as a way to attract her crush, Hutch Anderson, to her, and after reading that yellows were the easiest color to spot. Adam then returns home, still covered in jelly from that day's class. As he complains on how difficult it is to get his students to behave; Rachel tells him to relax because he's "a man, not a machine.", which gives him an idea and he heads straight to his lab, which is shown to be his classroom, where he successfully builds a toaster and begins working n the robot.

The next day, a bunch of girls line up wearing the same dress as Ivy, much to her displeasure. Hutch later shows up and takes another girl in the line, acting like she's a taxi. Echo shows up, thinking it's desperate and that she should just find another man. Ivy misunderstands this, however, and decides to find a fake boyfriend in order to make Hutch jealous. Ivy leaves Echo there, where another boy mistakes her for a taxi, but, too shy to decline, asks him where he was heading to.

Back in class, Adam introduces the students to a new student named Arthur. As Adam prepares to start the lesson where he left off, Slab throws a donut at his face, which forces Arthur, of the same height, to put him in his seat. Slab tries to push him down, being unable to, and refuses to sit down, causing Arthur to easily place him on some hangers. After class, Derby is easily impressed on how Arthur was able to handle Slab, and soon discovers Arthur's butt is a toaster, and Adam explains Arthur is an android named ARTHUR (Automated Robotic Teenager Hippopotamus Umbrella Rainbow). Derby warns Adam about robots turning on their creators, but Adam tells him that Arthur's three directives are to 1) protect Adam, 2) obey all instructions unless if it conflicts with directive one, and 3) make toast (except during Passover). After he tells Adam to "get out of here", Arthur thinks this is a command and literally gets out of there, while Adam and Derby chase him down.

As Arthur wanders around the school, Ivy lines up group of twelve boys so she can choose one to be her fake boyfriend, one of which is Derby. She rejects the first one for being too short, the second one for being too scrawny, Derby for being "ugh", the fourth boy for being dorky, the fifth for being sweaty, the sixth (who's also Derby) for being "too much like the ugh guy", the seventh for being smelly, the eight for being dorky, and the ninth (Echo, who accidentally enters the line) for being "too girly". She tries to convince the others to not pick Ivy, to no avail, and leaves. She continues, rejects the tenth boy for being sloppy, the eleventh and twelfth (who are twins) for being too many, and before rejecting the thirteenth one, she encounters Derby once again (in his French alter-ego), and rejects him for being too beaucoup. She sees Arthur, and lets him be her fake boyfriend, where they agree to have lunch together. Later, Adam arrives and finds Arthur, who tells that he's powered by a battery Adam stole from his mother's car (a flashback shows Rachel was unable to deliver the supper) and Adam asks Arthur to return to him, causing Adam to argue with Ivy. During their argument, Ivy accidentally says "go away", making Arthur leave once again. Ivy encounters Derby when turning back and leaves as well.

Outside, Principal Tater picks up the trash he found in the floor, where it gets stuck in his hand. Arthur arrives and asks him where the cafeteria is, and Tater asks Arthur questions about himself; he replies he is a new student. Tater, who was oblivious to the fact that Arthur is a robot, wonders if Arthur was good at sports at his old school. In the cafeteria, Adam and Derby wonder if he would show up there; Ivy, who's waiting for him in the cafeteria, sees Hutch and tries to tell him about Arthur. He does not believe her and leaves. Meanwhile, Derby soon gets the idea that Arthur can shape-shift. This is proven wrong, and Derby is then chased by the lunch lady who checked her for a toaster.

Principal Tater, who's playing with Arthur in the playground, finds out Arthur is very skilled in sports, and calls for a toast, but Arthur takes it literally and fires toast out of his built-in toaster in his butt. Principal Tater asks why he has a butt toaster, and he responds that he is a robot created by Adam. Tater figuratively says he will kill Adam, but Arthur again takes it literally and now decides he must destroy Tater, who runs away screaming.

As Principal Tater flees, Adam and Derby find the wreckage caused by the robot in the school hallway while looking for Tater — who's revealed to be hiding within one of the student's lockers, while Derby sees this as a chance to get rid of Tater. Adam then tries to find a way to stop Arthur. In the cafeteria, Arthur shows up, squeezing some tater tots for Echo, mistaking them for Principal Tater. Adam appears tries to warn everyone that Arthur is in fact a robot, but Ivy instead kisses Arthur and mildly gets shocked. As Arthur runs away and so does Derby, now disguised as a robot, Dang appears, questioning everyone about the mess. This gives Adam an idea.

Derby manages to lead him into the science lab where Dang awaits; due to Arthur's robotic physique, he is able to easily subdue Dang (by hitting him with a bagel) and puts him on some hangers next to Slab, who's still there. As Arthur arrives in the hallway, Adam, Derby and Echo all show up, dressed up as Tater, and so do the other students, claiming to be having a Tater lookalike contest; Tater pays them 500 for it. Confused that there are so many Taters, Arthur short-circuits and breaks down. Everyone then celebrates their victory.

Later that night, as Rachel prepares dinner, Ivy tells her that Hutch got jealous when she kissed Arthur, and nasked her on a date. Hutch appears on her house, dressed up as Tater, and reveals that he won the look-alike contest and decided to stay like that for a while. Ivy gets upset at this, and tries to get out of the date, and Hutch then kisses her. She tells him there was "no spark" and leaves Hutch. As Hutch leaves the house, Rachel asks him to help take out the trash. In the trash, Arthur opens his eyes and shoots out a piece of toast, revealing he is not dead.

Memorable Quotes[]

Running Gags[]

  • Slab throwing donuts.
  • Dang or Rachel saying to Adam if the jam is blood, and he answering that its not, and they telling to him that blood is easier to clean than jam.
  • Arthur wanting to terminate Tater.
  • Ivy saying that she reads to much.

Character Reveals[]

  • People find Ivy reading unusual.
  • Derby, Ivy, and ARTHUR know French.
  • ARTHUR is a prototype.
  • Rachel sometimes provides supper for seniors.
  • Slab likes banana cream.
  • Hutch wears contacts and regularly trims his nose hair (It runs in his family apparently).
  • Finnegan High barely wins any sporting events.

Errors[]

  • Derby (as a French guy) wasn't in the line of boys before Ivy see him.
  • Slab and Dang would die when Arthur put them in the hangers. Furthermore, the hangers wouldn't be able to support Slab's weight, so he would've gotten down easily.
  • As Mr. Tater enters a locker, he doesn't have a check paper or two tickets. But when Derby tells to him to give him a check and two tickets, he gives him a check and two tickets through the locker' holes.
  • When Mr. Tater falls down, you can see that he falls on the grass. But in the next scene he falls on a line of bikes.
  • In the scene before Adam and Derby watch the disaster Arthur did it, the scene shows Finnegan students entering the school even though the school schedule wasn't finished yet.

Allusions[]

  • Mr. Roboto - The title is a reference to Dennis DeYoung' song Mr. Roboto.
  • King Kong - Derby tells to Adam that they are in a King Kong class because he saw Slab trying to destroy the airplane.
  • The Terminator - Derby claims to Adam that machines would take over humanity, which is a very similar to the dystopian future in the franchise, where robots have taken over the planet. Furthermore, Derby states that ARTHUR has managed to learn how to shape-shift, similarly to some of the robots in the movies. However, he is - unfortunately- wrong.

Trivia[]

  • This is the first episode feature crossdressing, with Echo crossdressing as Principal Tater. Crossdressing would then be a popular gag throughout the series.
  • This episode is the first episode Arthur appears in. The events of this episode lead to Mr. Roboto 2.0.
  • Derby's french alter-ego, Antoine Bolognese, makes his debut.
  • This is the first episode where Mrs. Byrne is absent.
  • This marks the first (and second) kiss on the lips in the series (As Ivy had kissed Arthur and Hutch).
  • Echo plays a slightly minor role in the episode.
