— I like that, "Mr. T". I pity the fool who speaks in jibber-jabber. Drink your milk, fool!

"Mr. Detention" is the third episode in Season 1 of Mr. Young.

Synopsis

Adam learns that Echo is taking the same route home from school and is excited to walk with her until he learns he has detention duty and the only way to get out of it is to prevent anyone from getting in trouble. Adam and Derby try the whole week to keep Slab from getting detention.

Overview

It's Monday, and Adam is teaching the class a lesson on extremely high frequency, using a millimeter wave scanner typically used in airports. He asks Echo to go first, but realizes she isn't there; an excited Fortran tests the machine instead, where it's shown he carries an inhaler, a backup inhaler, allergy medicine, and medicine he should take if he has an allergic reaction to the allergy medicine. He convinces Derby to try out the machine, soon discovering he was stealing stuff from the classroom. At this point Echo arrives, discovering she was staying with her aunt in Oakridge, where he was also living at. Before Adam could show her the scanner, though, Derby stole it awkwardly walked to his seat with the scanner in his hoodie.

After realizing they could walk some together, Adam gets excited, before Tater shows up and tells him he'll have to supervise detention for the week. As Echo walks home alone, Adam is stuck in detention, and finds out there was one user in detention that day: Slab. When asked, Slab explains the story of how he got there using a harp from his "flashback kit": he locked four students, including Fortran, in the lockers at "Nerd Alley", the school's corridors. Adam realizes he has to prevent Slab from getting detention so he can walk home with Echo.

It's Tuesday. Slab goes to Nerd Alley, realizing no one's there; they all went to a Chewbacca meetup in Adam's classroom, with Adam as the Chewbacca himself. Echo soon discovers the meeting, attracting Fortran and the others (who shouted "female" and wanted to look nice), before Adam stopped them. Echo manages to snap a picture of Adam and then leaves. Slab, however, spots Mrs. Byrne searching for the keys to her classroom, and Slab takes her wig and runs away, getting detention. Echo goes home that day without Adam, who is disappointed.

It's Wednesday. Slab goes to Nerd Alley, realizing no one's there either. In Adam's classroom, the nerds encounter him dressed up as Darth Vader. However, he soon discovers Echo was there, disguised as a boy; she takes another picture of Adam and hurriedly leaves. Back in the corridor, Slab sees Mrs. Byrne searching for her keys again; he steals off her wig and runs away, without realizing it was actually Adam dressed as Mrs. Bryne; he puts a replacement wig back on. In the school yard, Derby tries to distract the real Mrs. Bryne, who was too focused on telling Derby what the charleston was to notice. In the cafeteria and halfway through the day, Slab smells something weird in his cafeteria lunch tray. Derby explains that it's tofu, but Slab interprets it as toe food, and throws the tray away, falling in Tater's face. Tater sends him to detention, again disappointing Adam.

It's Thursday. Slab goes to Nerd Alley, paying his respects by putting a basket of blowers, a "Get Well Soon!" balloon, and a toy bear. In Adam's classroom, this time he's dressed up as Master Yoda, signing autographs for the nerds. Echo, also there, tries to be the first to get an autograph and also takes another picture of him. He also dresses up as Mrs. Byrne again, while Derby also distracts the real Mrs. Bryne in the yard with his superior dance moves. In the cafeteria, Slab gets tofu again, but Derby, dressed up as a delivery guy, gives to Slab a box with pizza on it. In the detention classroom, Adam notices no one is coming, before Slab comes in with a special kit, which he says is not his detention kit. He notices Tater, wearing a new suede jacket (which he used in a day with a 0% chance of raining), and throws water balloons at him, soaking him and earning yet another detention.

It's Friday. Slab starts putting wanted posters for the missing nerds, missing them. In Adam's classroom, he's now dressed up as Princess Leia, alongside Derby dressed up as a trashcan labeled R2-D2. In the yard, Mrs. Byrne argues with Derby, mistaking him finding for a sweater in a school closet for him cheating on her. Adam, again dressed as Mrs. Byrne, fools Tater again but ends up encountering the real Mrs. Byrne, pretending to be her in a "fake mirror", shocking Mrs. Byrne herself, who eventually fools him and makes him run away. In the cafeteria, Derby brings out a double delivery for Slab and Tater, to distract both. In the yard, Tater shows Echo his new precision watch, while Derby and Echo, dressed as Italian painters, use a fishnet to catch Slab's water balloons from the detention classroom.

Adam asks Echo if they could walk home together, and she agrees. Meanwhile, Derby accidentally throws the water balloons at Derby, soaking him and his watch, and is then given detention by Tater. Slab, being out of school early for the first time in forever, is asked by Echo if they could walk home together and has to explain Star Wars to him. Adam, from the detention classroom, sees everything, remembering he now had to deal with Derby for the rest of the day, having no more chances to succeed.

Memorable quotes

Tater: (to Adam) Sure, no problem. Would you like anything else, a promotion, a raise, maybe a masseuse for your classroom?
Derby: We'll take that one. Should we go Thai or Swedish?

Slab: What's a nine-letter word for "incarceration entertainment"? Never mind, I got it. "Jail".

Adam: I've got it! It's so simple.
Derby: Maybe to you, Mr. Genius, but not everyone knows a Swahili word for hut.
Adam: I'm not talking about the crossword puzzle- (points to Slab) "cabanda".

Echo: I must be in the wrong room! Obviously I didn't come here to see Chewbacca... noble warrior of the Wookie race... I don't even know who that is.

Adam: Who's your daddy? I mean... I am your father.

Slab: Ough. The heck is this?
Derby: It's tofu.
Slab: Toe food? I'm not eating any food that came from someone's toes.

Adam: (as Mrs. Byrne) Are you checking out my gams, huh?
Tater: No no no, Mrs. Byrne, I'd never-
Adam: [If] I wanted a glare from you, Baldi, I['d] shine a light on your head!
