— Everyone, swab the inside of your cheek... and just to be clear, Slab, the cheek on your face!
Adam[src]

Mr. DNA is the sixth episode in Season 1 of Mr. Young.

Synopsis

Adam attempts to get the ban on cheerleaders lifted.

Overview

The episode begins with Adam in the Science Lab, teaching his class about DNA, although Derby uses this opportunity to get signatures for the debate club, while Echo cheats with her phone to answer Adam's questions. Adam has his students collect their own DNA samples while explaining how DNA provides certain traits from parents to their young (he subtly describes Echo while doing this, but Slab thinks it's about him).

In the quad, the Finnegan Fryers prepare for a pep rally; however, there is no real cheerleading, only Mrs. Byrne's cheerleading, causing everyone to vomit, to the delight of Dang, who was there to clean it. Slab tells Derby that the school has had no cheerleaders for years after Tater banned them; Adam calls cheerleading degrading against women, although rapidly backtracks when Echo says she wanted to be a cheerleader; wishing to see her in a short skirt, the two go inside the school. They stumble into Tater, and ask him why it was banned; Tater replies he banned them for a good reason. Tater then explains in a series of flashbacks what he calls "the Great Mascot Incident of 85".

Flashback 1

During the Great Spirit Day of 1985, Tater was the school mascot. He was supposed to lead the pep rally, but lost the head of his chicken costume; he explains the team was supposed to be the Finnegan Friars (as in Friar Tuck), but the guy of the uniform store, a butcher, assumed they referred to fryer chicken instead. He has lost the head of his chicken costume, and runs around looking for it. His head is found by a cheerleader, Rachel, and he puts it on, later realizing someone put glue on the chicken head. Tater assumed Rachel did it, seeing glue on her hands, and had to wear that head in school for a week. Tired of the head, he resorts to drastic measures (getting several people to use tug-of-war on it) to pull it off; however, he also loses part of his hair in the process.

Back in the real world, Tater insists that no cheerleaders would be allowed in the school, and that if he had to blame someone of it, they would have to blame Rachel. Adam and Echo go to the Young House and demand Rachel for an explanation, arguing an entire generation of cheerleaders had their heart broken, and this leads to Adam dong some cheerleader moves himself. She then explains in a series of flashbacks what she calls "the Great Cheerleader Frame-Up of 85".

Flashback 2

Rachel is forced to work on her photo collage of the War of 1812, which she never completed because there were no photos of the war. At Mrs. Byrne's insistence, she begins to work on her collage, cutting and gluing pictures from a cat magazine until she falls asleep (with her eyes pen), using it to sneak to the rally. She soon arrives there, seeing Tater look for the head. She finds it under one of the quad table seats and gives it to him, before realizing her hands were full of glue from the collage earlier. Tater, seeing the glue on her hands, thought she did it and threatened to tell on her, leading to her being suspended for a week.

Adam and Echo promise to clear her name, and soon go back to the school, specifically Mrs. Byrne's classroom, and find her again sleeping with her eyes open. They wake her up, and she begins to explain the year of 85 in a series of flashbacks.

Flashback 3

Mrs. Byrne is preforming a rodeo-themed show in the year of 1885 in front of a small crowd of men, where she dances and sings and the men cheer her.

Adam interrupts her, saying they wanted to hear about 1985, and not 1885. Finally, she then begins her second flashback on the Great Spirit Day of 85.

Flashback 4

As Mrs. Byrne tells Rachel to get working on her War of 1812 collage, she soon realizes Rachel has slime on hear hands, and other mysterious things start happening in the room; curtains closing blinds opening, books flying; her classroom was haunted. At this point, three nice men with backpacks showed up and saved the day.

Adam states that is the plot of Ghostbusters, proving Mrs. Byrne is no help in solving the cheerleading mystery. She asks the two to work on their own 1812 war collages, and takes a cat collage (likely from Rachel) from her chest as an example of a collage with lots of historical detail, and Echo finds she also had a chicken head stored in there.

In the Science Lab, Adam tells Echo he found two DNAs on the head: one obviously from Tater (alongside his hair), and an unidentified sample. He takes a sample from the glue and puts it on a machine, and after taking the results, he realizes the sample was remarkably similar to Slab's, reaching into the conclusion it must've been his father. The two decide to call him in for a discussion; Mr. Slabinsky shows up, surprised at Adam's age (14), and sits down to talk. Echo, disguised as Dang, tries to get DNA samples from Mr. Slabinsky by vacuuming his hair, but fails.

He then reassures Adam, explaining that he's hairless from head to toe as he has full-body alopecia; his hair, sideburns, and mustache are 100% alpaca, glued with a hot clue gun to his head. She later tries to get Mr. Slabinsky's cup, but he refuses to give it away, saying he's had it since 1992. Eventually, she's able to get Slab to sneeze in Adam's face after clapping the chalkboard erasers in his face, finally obtaining his DNA. Before they do anything with it, the real Dang shows up, mistaking Echo for his twin brother, Ding, and telling a family story about how Ding has not been forgiven for marrying a duck named Shirley, and the two prepare to fight.

When Adam tests the DNA (while Echo and Dang continue fighting), however, he discovers the DNA, while matching Slab's, does not match the one in the chicken head. Therefore, he realizes the skin must've come from Slab's mother... who shows up in the classroom at that moment, looking for her husband. Dang, realizing there are "worse things to marry", makes amends with Echo disguised as Ding.

Back in the school corridor, Adam, Echo, and Mrs. Slabinsky meet with Tater, and they confirm the story is true (although Tater mistakes Mrs. Slabinsky for a man). Mrs. Slabinsky then explains in a series of flashbacks what she called the "Great Tater Screamed Like a Baby Girl Incident of 85".

Flashback 5

In 1985, Mrs. Slabinsky had a huge crush on Mr. Slabinsky, one of the school's football players, but so were a lot of other cheerleaders, including Rachel, wh ended up kissing him. Seeing as she saw Rachel later on the quad with glue on her hands, she used this opportunity to frame her; she filled the missing chicken head with glue and hid it; when Tater found the head, Rachel gave it to him and therefore, ended up wearing it. With Rachel suspended for a week, Mrs. Slabinsky made her move, at the same time where Tater's chicken head was removed.

Seeing Rachel was innocent, Tater agrees to reinstate the cheerleaders (but bars Rachel from the next PTA meeting). Mrs. Slabinsky says she plans to have her daughter in the school the following year, which leads Tater to put it on a 1-year trial. In the return of Spirit Day, Echo and other cheerleaders participate in the pep rally, including Tater, dressed up as the school's chicken mascot. He soon realizes, however, his suit was full of glue; caused by Derby, who then runs away. Finally, Mrs. Byrne practices the caboose, leading Dang to arrive to clean up the future vomits.

Memorable quotes

Adam: (looking at Echo) ...or it gives us beautiful hair. Thick luxurious hair you just want to run your fingers through and smell and, snip off a lock to keep under your pillow and-,
Slab: Dude, I know I have nice hair but you're, kinda creeping me out.

Adam: Well, I, for one, think cheerleading is degrading to women.
Echo: Actually, I've always wanted to be a cheerleader.
Adam: That's why you should! The world needs more cheer and the people who lead it.

Adam: Okay, just take it easy! There are lots of advantages to being bald.
Tater: Name one.
Adam: Well... you don't have to spend all your money on shampoo. Or conditioner.
Echo: Or dates!

Adam: Why do you have that chicken head?
Mrs. Byrne: Why do you have those donkey ears?

Echo: (disguised as Dang) What about ferocious rocks which grow from scalp, right crystal waters and Mekong River?
